Panoramic Views From Clarendon Heights, $7M

by Philip Ferrato

In San Francisco’s Clarendon Heights neighborhood, there’s a quiet street tucked just below the Sutro Tower with spectacular views encompassing the Golden Gate, Marin County and Downtown. Already dotted with handsome Arts & Crafts Style homes, the neighborhood’s expansive hillside plots were further developed in the Post WWII boom with an array of expensive Modernist homes for a discerning clientele. One of these, built in 1958 for Donald and Marian Bernstein by Campbell & Wong, has just come on the market, asking $6,995,000; significantly, the Bernstein’s House is directly next to the Duncan House, Warren Callister’s handcrafted Japanesque masterwork in redwood.

Campbell & Wong, one of the Bay Area’s quietly influential architectural firms from 1948 to 1968, was founded by native Californians John C. Campbell [1914-1996] and Worley W. Wong [1912-1985]. Working in a deceptively modest style in wood and glass, they produced a wide range of housing types, from private residences to multi-family homes, often as urban infill, plus a widely published A-frame home that Campbell built for himself in Mill Valley and that could be produced as a kit. In 1963, the firm was commissioned to design one of the Case Study Houses (sadly, never built) joining an elite roster of American Modernist architects. Here in the Bernstein House, the architecture is discreetly subservient to the extraordinary views, with walls of  windows spanning the width within a crisp, restrained timber structure. Sensitively restored and updated in 2022, the 4-bed, 3.5-bath home is ready for its next half-century.
